Alternator-Upgrade Wiring Tips for Popular GM Charging
Feb 24, 2020The original 1960’s GM alternator employs an external voltage regulator. This alternator (10-DN), uses a flat, two-prong connection at the back of the alternator. The other main connection on the alternator is the output terminal that charges the battery. The least expensive upgrade from the 10-DN would be to step up to a 10-SI or 12-SI.

Mar 26, 2018Tuff Stuff recommends an 8-gauge wire for its 100-amp alternators, and a step up to a 6-gauge wire if the battery is in the trunk. A 140-amp unit should use a 6-gauge wire, and 4-gauge to the trunk. All 200-amp units should have a 4-gauge wire and a 2-gauge to the trunk.

Jun 27, 2022Wouldn't be a bad idea to install a 100-amp Mega-Fuse inline on the +12v alternator cable either, but this isn't always a simple job due to space constraints, etc. If the connections are good, the alternator isn't. There are reasons why GM never used the one-wire units on cars/trucks, these were designed for use on industrial/farm equipment
