Is there a way to tell if my timing belt has been changed
Feb 16, 2008I have changed a couple dsm timing belts in the past and have never seen a date, I can only imagine a 3s belt would be the same. So.. I checked the timing belt today and CRAP.. - NASIOC
Jun 02, 2011could be the part number and date code. My guess it's easier to change the belt than to find someone who knows how to interpret the code. And people normally mark the belt not the pulleys. Marks on the pulleys are from the factory. Seattle Subaru Timing Belt Done Right. | All Wheel Drive Auto
Jun 23, 2009The 1997 Subaru Outback Timing belt has an automatic hydraulic type tensioner applying the tension to the belt, so id wouldn’t think that to be the case, but a bearing in an old idler that was not replaced sure would cause that noise right before it fails.-Justin

Subaru timing belt recommendation is at 105K but it’s not common to have to replace the timing belt before this mileage due to oil leaks from either the cam seal’s or front crankshaft seal. There are other spots to check such as the oil pump and the large piston access 12mm allen head bolts in front of the block also leak oil sometimes.

Apr 28, 2011The guide over the crank sprocket is there to prevent the the timing belt from skipping or jumping especially if the vehicle is in gear and the car rolls backward. This came about when Subaru switched timing belt tensioner types in the late 90s.
Subaru Outback Questions - Timing Belt Maintenance - CarGurus
Subaru recommends that the belts be changed at 105,000 miles. Don't wait, take your car to the mechanic next week, I'm serious. If the timing belt should fail, you will be looking at a major engine overhaul and at least a complete valve job. It could cost you $3,000 to $4,000.
Subaru Timing Belt Myths - Maintenance/Repairs - Car Talk
Great car timing belt and water pump both done by dealership at 81,000 miles. Now at 156,000 does the timing belt need to be replaced before the 160,000 mark? I plan to keep this car for another 100,000 miles. Lots of “myths” and do’s and dont’s and theories on when to replace the timing belt
