matching electrode diameter to metal thickness - Miller
Are there rules of thumb for matching electrode diameter and base metal thickness? For example, what range of thicknesses would a 3/16" e6010 be expected to handle, and what would be a typical current to use for thin vs. thick metal? (Suggestions for other rod types and diameters would also be appreciated.) electrode size to metal thickness size? | MIG Welding Forum
Nov 15, 2011Electrode are in standard widths 1, 2mm, 2, 3, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm. It refers to the thickness of the core wire. Roughly the electrode will weld steel of its thickness or a bit less to about twice its thickness. That's very roughly, but it will depend what you are doing. You can also build welds up with multiple passes with a thin rod.
A BASIC GUIDE OF ARC WELDING ELECTRODES: ELECTRODE SIZE
May 29, 2009The following will serve as a basic guide of the amp range that can be used for different size electrodes. Note that these ratings can be different between various electrode manufactures for the same size rod. Also the type coating on the electrode could effect the amperage range.

Electrode size - Weld Talk Message Boards
Is there any genera rule of thumb when choosing electrode size versus the thickness of metal being welded. I know if you weld something really thin you want a small rod, but is there a chart anywhere that says 1/8 rod is a good choice for 1/8inch-3/8inch etc.
