WIRING DIAGRAM FOR POINTS DISTRIBUTOR
The Classic Mechanic: Points/Condenser Ignition Explained
In a 4-stroke, 4-cylinder engine (as shown in the diagram), for every 1000 revolutions of the engine, the ignition cycle will be completed 2000 times. For more information on the individual components in a points/condenser ignition system, see the separate articles in the Components Explained section.
How a Car Ignition System Works
The ignition system consists of an ignition coil, distributor, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and spark plugs. Older systems used a points-and-condenser system in the distributor, newer (as in most we'll ever see anymore) use an ECU, a little brain in a box, to control the spark and make slight changes in ignition
The power supply for the breaker point distributor is routed through a resistance wire to drop the voltage and prevent damage to the points. A bypass wire was also used to supply the distributor with a full 12 volts at startup. On the other hand, an HEI distributor requires a full 12 volt supply.
I converted my distributor on my Chevelle from a point
The points distributor used a resistance to lower the voltage to the points in the run position to prevent wear on the points. This was done with either an external ballast resistor or a resistance wire in the ignition circuit depending on the year of the car. For starting purposes, there was a 12 volt override supplied by a separate wire from
How do you wire an ignition coil to a distributor
How do you wire an ignition coil to a distributor? by HowStuffWorks Contributors . Next . The ignition coil is the part of your engine that produces high voltage in order to power your cylinders. The distributor is what gets that high voltage from the coil to the right cylinder. The breaker points are also responsible for the spark's
